I read this post recently from Rachel Emily and it reminded me of how much I love bucket lists...or what I like to call a life list. She has so many great goals, I added some of hers to my list too! I have lists for every month goals, it's time to update my overall goals. 

I've always heard the term "bucket list" and never really like it.  I just kept thinking what happens if I actually do all those things like I'm planning to do...I die? So instead I call this my Life List and every time I cross one of these off I'm going to add another because it's so much more fun that way! There are major things I want to do in my lifetime, like follow God with all my heart and mind, get married, and have children are the most important things to me, but these are more of the random things I really want to accomplish, in no specific order. 

  • Work at Disney!!! First goal down
  • Spend at least a month vacation in California
  • Get a black belt in martial arts
  • Be able to communicate in Spanish
  • Be able to communicate in French
  • Be able to communicate in Italian
  • Have a home library of books I've actually read
  • Ride in a hot air balloon
  • Take dance lessons
  • Have a spa weekend-and relax
  • Own a classic Burberry trench
  • I want to say to bungee jumping- but I feel like it would freak me out too much- so it's half way on the list (yes I can do that it's my list)
  • Go on an awesome road trip
  • See the Grand Canyon
  • See The Northern Lights
  • Visit at least four of the seven wonders of the world
  • Visit the Louvre
  • Participate in the La Tomatina food fight
  • Go to Seattle's Pike Place Market
  • Read all the lord of the rings books
  • Build a habitat for humanity home
  • Have my own garden- both a eat out of one- and a pretty flower one
  • Swim with dolphins
  • Learn to play the guitar
  • See a Broadway Play
  • Go to Vancouver Canada
  • Take my dad to Scotland
  • Hold or pet an owl
  • See the ball drop on new years eve in time square
  • Sponsor a child in need
  • Ride a camel
  • Go on a safari
  • Drink milk fresh from a coconut
  • Bike through Amsterdam
  • Visit a tulip field
  • Visit a lavender field

Why Asking "Why" Is So Important

I was in a meeting recently and the person leading the meeting kept asking "why." He asked us why we do what we do. This is a question that in society we tend for forget about. He was trying to make a point that in life there are so many times that we don't allow ourselves to figure out why we choose something or why we are doing something. We focus on how to do things or the best way to do something, or how to cut costs to do it, but do we ask why? Not nearly as much as we should. 

Even though people don't always think about why they are doing something, if you ask people "why" you can eventually get to the core of why they are really motivated. It will take a few times of asking why to get to the core of the reason, but it's important to do this. If we don't understand why we are motivated, it's easy to lose momentum when things start getting hard. 

For example: 

As a society we tend to focus on the what and where vs. the why and how. We focus on the immediate what do I need to do at work, and weeks start to slip away. We're focusing too much on the immediate and not on how the immediate is effecting the future and eternity. 

What you are doing today will form how your future is. It doesn't define your future, in that you can change and refocus on what you need to, but it's important to keep at the forefront of your mind the "how" and "why" of your decisions. 

The What: The what of life is what you're doing right now, you are working or going to school. You are getting groceries etc. It's factual. 

The Where: It's where you're at the time. The where can be important in that if you don't feel like this is where you need to be and you've been feeling lead to go to another place, maybe you should start seriously thinking about your where. On the other hand, don't let your where stop you from doing what you want to do. You may not have to be in a certain location to start making steps towards what you want. Location can be important but it isn't everything. 

The How: The how is the constant planning phase. The more you can get ahead of something the more proactive you can be and the less reactive. The more you can sit down and spend time thinking through how you're going to accomplish your goals or plan your trip the less you will be stressed once you are there. The more you can think of different ways to do something the more options you'll have to succeed. 

The WHY: The why, to me, is the more important question. It's time to let the two year old in you out. Ask why? Put yourself in the hot seat and go down to the core of why you do the things you do. It's so easy to stop asking why and start going without realizing. Your reasoning why is what truly motivates you. In the hard times of your career, job, school, moving, traveling, it's your reasons and convictions that keep you moving forward.

The WHY needs to be at the core of your mind when you have a bad day, because it's fact that bad days are going to happen. You're going to have setbacks during your time trying to make progress. If you're trying to open a store, you'll have times when the loan won't go through, or the pipes will burst, but the why is what keeps you going. If your why is to make money to support your family and give back to the community, keep that in mind when your shipment gets pushed back and now you have to figure out another way to get your product.

August Goals (10 in 30)

August Goals - AVintageJoy

I'm so excited for August!!! It's my birthday month, I'm going to be home for a few days,and I'll hopefully get to go hiking this month. I'm really looking forward to it, but I also don't want it to slip by and realize it's already September. In the spirit of making everyday count, here are my goals for this month. 

1// Upload my spending every week to the budget app so that I can accurately keep track of my spending. I keep doing this every few weeks and by that time it's not enough time left in the month to make a big change. Has anyone used Mint? I may switch to that, it seems easier to use. 

2// Go to the beach and pool. This is a big one for me while in Florida. I wasn't a huge fan of the beach but since the option has ben taken away from me it's all I want to do when I visit. Well that and Disney of course!!

3// Have more "phone free" moments. I've been attached to my phone to much this past month. I want to have a few hours each day where my phone is somewhere in my apartment but I don't really care where that is.

4// Finish a book or a podcast. I'll have time on the plane and during the commute to read or listen. I have three - four books that are all half read. I ned to finish some of them.

5// Try to eat less bread. While I absolutely love bread and desserts, they aren't good for me in large quantities. I need to eat less bread this month. More veggies!! 

6// Get a more consistent amount of sleep. The way my life has been working recently equals a lot of different hours of sleep each week. On the days I'm working I get about 6-7 hours, and then when I'm off I sleep in way too much. I would love it if I could get to 7-8 hours each night consistently. This doesn't sound too hard, but my work schedule is so varied that it is a problem.

7// Find a pair of sandals! I've been looking for the past few weeks for sandals to bring with me to Florida and I found nothing! Maybe in the land of the sandal I'll find something. 

8// Go to the dentist!! I really need to go and this month would be a perfect month to go. Self care! 

9// Donate one full bag of items to a thrift store. I really want to pare down on some of my things. I don't think I could do minimalist, although power to you if you can I'm so impressed!! I do want to have a more minimal apartment, when everything has a place and theres just the right amount it's a beautiful thing! 

10// Relax!! It's really important for me to unplug this month and have some fun! I've been spending such a large amount of each day the last few months working, and while I do love that, it's draining. I need to recharge for the upcoming months.

July Favorites

July Favorites - AVintageJoy

Last July I was in NYC, so I'm definitely ready to be back Florida and relax for a few days. If I don't come back tan, I'm doing something wrong! I'm so ready for a Disney day and a day at the beach. Last week I missed the water so much that I found a coffee shop near a lake just so that I could see water, I know right! Here are some of my favorites from this past month.

1// Inspiration. Linda Rodin is in her 60s and has lived life without care. I love that she has lived in Italy, started her own company by accident, and worn what she wants to and what makes her feel good vs. what's fashionable at the time. If you haven't seen an interview with her you should google it! 

2// Post. One of my friends sent me this post by Cece from Plussizeprincess and it's so real. I've read a lot of posts about how people run their own businesses and I really resinated with this post. I love that she is so real and says don't quit your job until you're stable enough to. Preach! Because yes it's exciting, but you also need to pay rent and eat. 

3// Purchase. There are so many moment in the dressing room that you're trying to decided if you would really wear "this" in real life. I had one of those moments this month, I was nervous but decided to get the blue and white striped romper and try it out. I love it! I was nervous the first time I wore it and then I remembered that everyone else is thinking about how they look and not paying attention to me. I feel good in the romper and it's super comfy! 

4// Entertainment. I'm always watching youtube videos!! I just find them so motivating. One channel this month that I've been binging is Gary Vaynerchuk. When I first started watching his videos it took me a while to get use to the way he talks, honestly his vocal inflections. He is a loud talker, but once I got use to it, I love it! He's so passionate about what he does. He talks a lot about how it takes time to get to where you want to be and how those who succeed keep going!

5// Focused on. Getting ready for vacation!! I'm so excited! I need a break from my 10+ hour days at work. I know I'm basically going home, but it's still going to be a vacation.

Enjoying the Moment

Enjoying the Moment

I had a ten minute moment that I truly enjoyed. I didn't "do it for the gram" I did it for me. The picture above was taken by one of my friends when she was here last, but my moment was just that, a moment in time where everything felt right. I sat on my kitchen counter, with the christmas lights above my kitchen cabinets on and the overheadlight from the stove shining down. I sat on the counter reading Amy Poehler's "Yes Please" while my pasta finished cooking.
